In 1763, after Joseon - the ancient Korea - established diplomatic relationships with Japan, a Joseon delegation was sent to the city of Akamagaseki, Japan. At night, calligraphers and their disciples met. An intellectual debate ensued in the most sophisticated form, not through speech, but through calligraphy of Chinese characters.
